This Week In Linux
Hi TWIL, I have a few quick questions for you, I hope you have the time to respond. First of all what screen recording application do you use? and second, What operating systems are you currently using? It seems we are using similar ones, personally I have a macbook pro which I have recently upgraded to OS 10.7, A old IBM pentium 4 running moonOS, and a netbook running arch. Thanks very much for reading, hope you are able to get back to me. Cheers, MNML.

Sorry for the delayed response! I usually use ffmpeg (command line application) or Kazam (graphical frontend for ffmpeg) to capture my screen. I have also messed around with Screenflow on Mac, but not for my YouTube videos.

On my laptop, I’m actually running Mac OS X 10.7 as well. When kernel version 3.2 comes out, I plan to reinstall Ubuntu or Arch on it, so the Broadcom wireless should work (the driver isn’t quite done yet, from what I’ve read). On my desktop, I’m running Arch Linux. I’ve used Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, and several other distros on it, but I just prefer Arch for the level of control you have right out of the box.

Hello! I would like to know if is possible to use a program installed in other distro in the same machine. For example: I'm using Debian right now and I go to the Ubuntu partition from where I launch the program to run while I'm still in Debian.
I hope I was clear enough because my english is bad.

To be honest, that’s something I’ve never actually tried. I would think it should work, but might have problems if there are dependencies that the application needs that you don’t have installed on both distros.

Hey jordan, im a massive fan, how can we speed up our linux OS's? well more specifically ubuntu

There are a few ways to speed up a Linux distro: stop non-essential services that are eating resources, use lighter weight environments and/or applications (example, XFCE or LXDE instead of Gnome/KDE), or add faster hardware components (faster/more RAM, solid state hard drive, faster processor, etc.)

Hey Jordan! I remember jumping onto one of your live streams before, and I liked it... But, that was unfortunately one of the last ones you did! I think that that livestreaming every once in a while might be cool, and I'll definitely try to hang around while you do! So, I guess that makes my question, are you up for streaming anymore?

I really miss streaming, but it’s so hard to find the time to do it, especially a consistent time.

Hey Jordan,

How's the experience of running linux on your MacBook Pro going now that you've had it a while?

I’ve actually been running OSX on the Macbook for the most part. The wireless driver not being available for Linux yet makes it very inconvenient, because I have to carry a USB dongle along with me anywhere I go.

That said, Arch performed very nicely on it with Gnome 3/Gnome Shell. Battery life wasn’t quite as good as it is in OSX, but still very admirable.

what makes you like linux some much then windows what wrong with mac they do good editing videos?

Nothing wrong with Mac. When I started editing videos, I couldn’t afford a Mac, and I fell in love with the editors on Linux. Now that I own a Mac, I still do all of my editing on Linux, because I’m comfortable with it, and I don’t care for iMovie.

can you do a tutorial on how to use apache?

Possibly. That could be an EXTREMELY in-depth topic…

Trying out something that I haven’t done in a year or so. What do you think of it?
I’ve really missed having this sort of community interaction, so I hope this works out.
